I live in northern NJ, in a wooded area. This was my first spring that I grew beautiful tulips that the birds decimated. I also started four rose bushes this year and now that they are finally blooming, the birds are pecking away at those too. If the woodsy creatures aren't eating my flowers and vegetables, the birds are pecking at all the petals. It's very frustrating!

I live in La Grande, Oregon (6B zone) where temps range from -16F to 100F. I want so badly to grow avocados. It looks like I would have to grow them in a grow bag sitting on a dolly so I could roll them into a greenhouse as needed to avoid extreme temps and too much sun. Maybe next year.

Thanks for the video. I have some questions. The first is: Is simultaneous cross-pollination more efficient between two different verieties of avocado trees in the same field? Or can it also be done efficiently between trees of the same verieties? Which one is better? . Second: If it were better for simultaneous cross-pollination between two different verieties of avocado trees, which veriety would you prefer as the veriety that blooms simultaneously as a male and the Haas veriety as a female? Third: If we have a field with 100 trees totally, what is the appropriate number of male trees that correspond to the appropriate number of female trees or rather what is the ratio between them? What is the optimal distribution map for the distribution of those 100 trees in the field? Thank you very much in advance.

Good questions. I'll answer what I can! You'll get the greatest amount of fruit set if you've got a mix of A-type and B-type flowers. It's true that in SoCal, you can plant a single A-type and get fruit because of how their flowers will function. But having both types should give a 25% higher yield than planting one type alone. I'd also plant multiple cultivars (multiple a-type and multiple different B-types) for greatest production and variety. I'm not sure or proportions of how many B-type you should plant to ensure solid pollination, but I imagine planting them in blocks of 1 b-type to every 4 a-types should be sufficient if they're close enough for the bees to make the jump. Good luck!

I can't tell you how many bare root fruit tree I received that has NO, NONE, ZERO NADA feeder roots. They come with 1 or 2 'main' roots that are chopped off after 4 inches or so. I don't think a single one that arrive that way take. I naturally NEVER use the nursery again. They ones that come with larger root masses usually do better. I don't understand why don't nurseries take better care. Sorry for the rant but this well done video triggered me.

A boysenberry sends up new canes each year from the "crown" in the ground. Each cane flowers and fruits the second year (boysenberries are "Floricane"). We remove every cane that has fruited, as those canes themselves are spent and won't produce more fruit.

Very low concentrations of the popular organic insecticide spinosad have profound effects on beneficial insect species, including vision loss and neurodegeneration, new research led by the University of Melbourne has found. The study, published in ELife, used the vinegar fly Drosophila to analyse the impact of chronic exposure to low concentrations (0.2 parts per million) of spinosad and the resulting physiological impacts on the brain and other tissues. Spinosad is commonly used to control insect pests including thrips, leafminers, spider mites, mosquitoes, ants and fruit flies, in both commercial and domestic settings. “Within a matter of 20 days, tiny doses of spinosad can have an alarming impact on the brains of adult Drosophila. Observing sections of brain tissue under microscope demonstrated there was an average of 17 per cent of the fly brains destroyed due to exposure,” said Dr Felipe Martelli from Monash University, who completed this work as part of his PhD at the University of Melbourne. “Neurons that serve vital functions die leaving large vacuoles, fluid-filled sacs, in the brain. This leads to neurodegeneration, blindness and behavioural changes in adultvinegarflies. Due to the Drosophila’s genetic and biochemical similarities to other insects, the research indicates that these impacts could be translated to other beneficial insects such as bees," Dr Martelli said. As a natural substance made by a soil bacterium, spinosad is often thought to be less harmful to beneficial insects and is frequently used as an alternative to synthetic insecticides, study co-author, Professor Philip Batterham, from the School of BioSciences and Bio21 Institute at the University of Melbourne said. “There is often an assumption that organic equates to safer, but our study finds this isn’t the case. Spinosad is now registered for use in over 80 countries, and it poses a far greater risk to beneficial insects than previously thought. Concerningly, the low concentration levels used in this study is what would be commonly found in groundwater or in the air through incidental exposure.” “Based on earlier work by our research group using similar techniques to this study, spinosad was found to have a much greater negative impact on vinegar flies at far lower doses than imidacloprid, a synthetic insecticide which has been banned in Europe for its impacts on non-target insects including honeybees,” Professor Batterham said. “While this study does not aim to pin the blame on spinosad, it does show that having an organic label doesn’t always mean safer. All insecticides, no matter their source, need to be rigorously studied for any unintended ecological impacts,” Professor Batterham said. A collaboration between the University of Melbourne, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of Texas, this study adds to a growing body of evidence indicating that insecticides are contributing to the global decline in population sizes of many beneficial insect species. Dr Martelli’s research was enhanced by the opportunity to do experiments in the lab of a global leader in neuroscience, Professor Hugo Bellen at the Baylor College of Medicine. “Large-scale insecticide application is a primary weapon in the control of insect pests in agriculture, but we know that around the world insect populations are decreasing in size by about one percent each year; this decrease is largely in insects that are not pests,” Professor Batterham said. “When you look at insect species disappearing it's almost like randomly pulling blocks out of a Jenga tower; its destabilising ecosystems making them vulnerable to collapse.”

I’m watching my 3 yr old ollalieberries and this video really helped me to identify the perfectly ripe ones. The key is the swelling of the seed “balls”. I’ve trained mine from 2 8x4 planter beds in the yard straddling a pathway, to go over arches over the path, made from 2 cattle panels so they also seem to be contained for the time being and look great. I’m going to let them fill both the planter boxes too so it’s just berries berries berries. For extra measure I ran 2’ chicken wire around each box to keep out critters. I live in LA county zone 18.
